Psalm 139 is David’s prayer for vindication from God as he faces his enemies. God knows him, God sees him, and God will vindicate him. There is nowhere he can go where God is not there. David praises God’s omnipresence, Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there (Ps 139:7–8). Even greater, we have the promise of God’s Son, Jesus Christ, who has promised to always be with us until the end of the age (Matt 28:20).

This past month saw us traveling, leaving Chile for the first time in over a year. We were able to spend two weeks in the United States visiting our families. It was a hectic, hurried time, filled with frantic shopping and packing, but also a wonderful chance to reconnect with our families. We have changed a lot in the past two years, and so have they—especially the nieces and nephews! It was good to get to know them again. We were thankful for safety in the many miles we traveled and for a safe arrival back home in Antofagasta.

We hit the ground running, jumping back into our schedule of spending time with people, teaching, studying, learning, and listening. Spring is in the air here in northern Chile—the sunshine is warmer, the nights not quite as chilly—and we’re loving it! This past Sunday it even rained for several minutes, leaving behind puddles (that lasted about an hour or so—remember, there are no storm drains or runoffs). We have enjoyed several days of beautiful sunshine. This coming month, Bekah has the opportunity to travel to Santiago for a pastors’ wives retreat. In addition, we are assisting our teammates in hosting Ethan Bauer, a recent college graduate who is experiencing a year of “hands on” ministry in South America with GMSA missionaries. We appreciate your prayers on our behalf to the God who is always with us.

We are thankful for the two weeks that God gave us to spend with our families in the United States.
Bekah wanted to eat a fresh apple. On Labor Day, we ran a race and at the finish line, a local orchard was handing out apples. Wish granted!
I told her, just imagine what it would taste like if we put that apple in a refrigerated warehouse for six months, then a container for two months and shipped it to Chile, then on the back of a truck for two days up to Antofagasta….
It’s impossible for us to describe to our friends here in Antofagasta what summer in the United States is like, and it’s just as hard to describe to you what Antofagasta is like. They are just two very different worlds.
  • Thank God with us for safe travels to, from, and within the United States last month.
  • Thank God with us for the special times we were able to spend with family.
  • Thank God with us for God’s continued presence with and care for us in every moment.
  • Pray to God with us for his grace to our church family here in Antofagasta, enabling us to continue to grow more like Jesus in our lives, marriages, thinking, and attitudes.
  • Pray to God with us for his grace to continue to learn and master Spanish.
  • Pray to God with us for his grace our church continues to grow and mature. We are looking for a more permanent place to meet and seeking out qualified elders and deacons.
