The apostle Peter admonishes Christians, “Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you” (1 Pet 5:5b–7).

Humility is one of those things that sounds good on paper, but encountering it in daily life is a different story! Learning a second language is a humbling endeavor: every day we are (kindly) corrected dozens of times by (well-meaning) teachers, friends, and helpers. Even more often, we say something in Spanish and realize that it’s incorrect and we should have said it another way. Countless other times we just don’t even know what to say. It is a humbling process.

Our personal heart idols of “being right” and “looking smart” and “knowing” are repeatedly smashed day after day. It is all part of God’s gracious plan to work all things for our good—producing Christlike humility in us.

This coming month, we have the privilege of sharing our burden for northern Chile with our Spanish-speaking church here in Texas, Grace Baptist Mission, on March 26. Mark also has been graciously offered the opportunity to preach that Sunday morning (in Spanish). The weekend of April 6–9, we are looking forward to participating in a Missions Conference at the Church of the Open Bible in Burlington, Massachusetts. We are looking forward to the time while praying for God-given strength and endurance for a long weekend of travel and ministry in the middle of our school schedule. Please pray with us and for us!

We are thankful for the privilege of going to school together and having each other during this time.

We enjoy the fellowship and interaction with our classmates.

 Thank God with us:

  • For his grace in bringing us past the halfway point of our semester here in language school.
  • For his care of every one of our needs and worries. He cares for us!
  • For his wisdom in helping us seek out and take advantage of many opportunities to learn and speak Spanish.

Pray to God with us:

  • For his spiritual strength and encouragement as we labor through the daily routine of language school.
  • For his Holy Spirit to produce in us the Christlike fruit of meekness as we work hard learning Spanish.
  • For his grace in word and deed toward each other as we work together toward our goal of learning Spanish.
  • For opportunities to point believers and unbelievers alike to Christ as we have opportunity.
